In Iran there is limited freedom of speech, which made life difficult for Sima as an artist. She had friends who were executed or simply disappeared. Twenty years ago she came to the United States and eventually settled in Carrboro, North Carolina. But after her visa expired she was arrested and almost deported back to Iran. During the three months she spent in prison, her friends took in her eleven year old daughter and eventually helped secure her release.
