  • I have to ask why you didn't leave the original American flag where it was instead of pasting over it.

  • Texas was weak after its war with Mexico and saddled with a huge international debt and no real natural resources. It had a small population and only won against the Mexicans because of Santa Ana's incompetence and aid from Americans. It never could have expanded nor survived as an independent nation for the 70 some years until oil became important. The US or some other power would have taken it over.

  • Texas would win

  • First, why would there be a civil war? No new territory= no freesoilers = no Republicans= no civil war. Second, Texas couldn't get more territory from the U.S. America would require a Pacific port, and would fight tooth and nail to keep as much land as possible. You're also going on the assumption that everything would be the same. Two world wars, basically same Presidents, Soviet Union still rises; things would be A LOT different. And Bush isn't from Texas, he was born in Connecticut.

  • My problem with this scenario is that the Republic of Texas was fairly weak and poor. That's why they were looking for an union with someone. (American statehood won, but Sam Houston wanted Texas to become a British colony.) If they had survived the initial years, it might have worked.

  • No. No no no no no.

For one, Texas WOULD NOT have managed to hold it's own against Mexico. For another, A small country like that, constantly barraged BY MEXICO would NOT be strong enough to take territory from America, even during the civil war. Which, on that note, would have gone much, much, much differently.

  • When socialists and free marketers work together for the common good, everybody wins.

  • @alternatehistorypt I get it bush is a democrat gore is a republican
