Actually, using hand signs and gestures of any sort is incredibly effective in memorizing things in nearly every subject.
If his intent was to teach them sign language, then he certainly did not do that effectively. However, if his intent was to put motions to the sounds and give the children something to link with the sounds in order to memorize them, he did that quite effectively. Hearing or deaf, the students can remember "signs" (correct or not) in order to recall this lesson.

Hi, I'm a mom of 3 and I can't afford preschool. I use PHONIC DANCE STUDIO and it was amazing. My kids learned 26 new dance moves AND all their letter sounds in 2 weeks. Don't worry its all you need to get ready for preschool or kinder. You can find it here on youtube. It costs less than $10 to download and it has saved me alot of money, even if your child is in preschool this will really help.

@ShaiMyst I believe the students are deaf and its an Oral class. Their attempt teaching the kids are futile, and a high percentage of the deaf kids will not succeed let alone be a hearing person. If so, then my other argument is that the American Sign Language (ASL) is being mauled lingusitcally, and it is called linguism. Its politically incorrect to maul the English Language as much as it is to maul the American Sign Language. If I am deaf in that class, I would rather be dead than alive!

@Bunjer I don't think the children are deaf. Because they are repeating everything he says, and exactly as he says it and even putting in other vocal comments as well.
I think he is just using the signs as a way to make learning phonics fun. Phonics is about the sounds of letters and letter combinations and using that knowledge to help with pronouncing words, more than anything else.. So knowing that I'd say this is a hearing class. Unless you can correct me otherwise....I'm not sure

@avbria bumped into you in here.. ;)

What the heck is this?? I would rather die than to be in that class with this phonics teacher. If I was going to look back who my teachers were, I would blank this memory out for sure. Trust me! Happened in 2006,and then ask any deaf student in that very class if he is their favorite teacher. I would bet that most of them would say no way! Kids know when their intelligence is insulted by then, and you people still have no idea with this kind of thing. Take this from a Deaf person since birth!

Also, I have no vested interest in this, but just want people to have knowledge. I happened to click on this and had to respond to these allegations. Also, this is probably fun for the kids. Anyone thought about that? Whenever you can make something for the child fun or exciting, learning will be easier and more effective! Hey it's even true for me and adults in general!

Wow, grow up. Where does is say he is trying to be ASL interpreter? Who said he is excellent sign language? Please before you make comments, try to get what is actually happening in the video.
You can do that by reading comments below and also research on google.

The sign for snake he used is correct and what I use also, however, I've always used and seen it signed closer to the mouth and forward. It is a 'bent-v' hand shape.

I know! If people would just read and not try to assume or infer and if they don't know what phonics is, educate themselves like I do/did, to make sure I had the correct understanding.
How many people do this with their students?
Also good questions.

Did he say he is teaching ASL? No, he didn't say that. Look at the other comments. Also, how do you know its ineffective? Do you know these children? Let's think before we type people! like someone else said and like I told someone else, this is about "phonics" Knowledge is power, go google it and instead of everyone bashing this guy for trying to help little kids learn phonics, let's say, "hey, pretty cool technique" some of the signs are wrong? will the children go and hang out with Deaf ppl?
You inspired me to post my zoophonics video. It's titled Peter's zoophonics video. Are you a Kindergarten teacher too?

I am a special education teacher. I also teach phonics to k-2 classes. I am working on my own phonics system, but I haven't posted anything from it yet.
