  • "If a community values its children, it must cherish their parents" John Bowlby 1951. This is the point, we need to start nurturing the nurturers again.. if your needs aren't met (as a parent) you will struggle to meet the needs of your children.. Mrs Thatcher denegrated motherhood and family life and New Labour did little to rectify that, hence the high divorce rates, high numbers of single parents, and surging tide of mental health problems in the UK. We need a more humane, ethical society.

  • @cruyffianslip

Unfortunately Bowlby did not cherish both parents equally and it would be misleading to characterise his work in this way. Children need both parents and his work is still used to undermine this principle.

  • UK government policy isn't that mothers should stay at home-far from it,women are under excessive pressure to return to work. Similarly in the US Barack Obama seems to have this view that mothers who stay at home are a bit wacky! Many if not most mothers experience feelings of guilt when leaving their infants to go to work-these emotions are driven by hormones, that tells you everything! The important thing is for society to support mothers who stay at home and mothers who choose to work!

    Many thanks for your comments,

  • Interesting, but spoiled for me when the music clip was added. It nade following the commentary much more difficult.

  • @LondonKen2006,

if the music is the only problem it must be okay.

My next intended video clip will be on the way Bowlby's work is received in the classroom - This will have no music. Traditionally his word is accepted as gospel but is the tide turning?

    Many thanks for your comment.

  • If you type in paternal bonding on youtube it will suggest "maternal bonding" what an insult!

  • Infants respond to those who responded sensitively to them, not just their mothers .... very interesting.

  • The music kinda killed it

  • @evenToddlers But John Bowlby's son now lectures doesn't he, on the importance of fatherhood... We have to keep people in the context of their time I would say... Values change and society moves on. Although these days of course, more and more children are growing up with no father figure in the house, men don't seem so keen on committment as once they were - so that is changing too... Perhaps John Bowlby was right after all :-)

  • Babies need their mums. Dads are more important when the kids are older, say about 6 yrs up, but a lot depends on the actual personalities involved

  • "A privilege place mothers are given by society"? And these guys, with a Phd, get paid to do these studies. Even baboons know rank in the family hierarchy. Females give birth, and nurse the young - no brainer here.
