109 year old lady

Gladys DeGroat has lived to see a new decade and a new millennium ushered in. At 109-years-old, she is believed to be the oldest person in the Hudson Valley Region.

DeGroat lives at Park Manor Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Middletown. "She's feisty," said Theresa Wintermeyer, a nursing assistant. "She's hard of hearing, but understands what's going on around her. And, she can walk, too."

The staff of Park Manor said they treat DeGroat like a queen, but she cusses like a sailor when she's annoyed.

"When I was a girl, the harshest thing I ever heard her say was 'damn'," said her 70-year-old grand-daughter, Beverly Walsh. I think she started cursing after she lost her only child (my mother) in 2001. She had a son, but he died when he was 18. She's out-lived everyone."
