I volunteered last July and friends were there in Dec and Jan this year. The Eles are still chained up, the circus is not set up for donations for food which I appreciate is more costly in Surin to other regions rather it goes to the management. When I was there i-to-i volunteers were encouraged to buy ivory goods. I saw mahouts beating circus eles behind the stockade out of audience view with metal hooks. There are 7 eles who 1 wk a mth get respite from this cruelty courtesy of ENF volunteers

i volunteered there with the elephants for two week, and i can assure you they are not in solitary confinement and they have fresh food everyday. the village has some funding from the government because they take the elephants off the streets and into safety.the show is for donations because food is expensive and they eat all day. the elephants in this village are absolutely not mistreated in any way.
The show at the village is horrendously cruel. The elephants are stabbed & beaten daily to force them to perform circus tricks for unsuspecting tourists. They are then chained up in solitary confinment all day with no access to water & very little food.
I urge all tourists to research elephant cruelty in thailand - dont be taken for a fool as the show owners want you to be. Trekking camps similarly abuse thier elephants & literally work them to death for the pleasure of tourists
