it's actually not dells problem it's nvidia's high end gpu's with the fan not distrabuting the heat enough so this causes a major problem with the graphic card and then it's dead...same thing happenes on a hp laptop..dell has made some updates to change the bios profile to speed the fans speed up

m1330 user here. this is strictly an nvidia geforce problem. Intel GMA users will not experience this problem. This case has been documented with dell and nvidia.

get a heatgun and heat up the gpu this will met the solder in place
if warranted have dell deal with this

yuppers... the first time it happened i was like 'what the freak?!?!' i notice that if i place gentle pressure on the laptop where i normally type, using the palm of my right hand, i could cause the lines that would appear to appear and disappear.. which makes me wonder if the motherboard is very sensitive or intolerant to flexing. I have noticed the computer overheating more than normal too.

after many calls with Dell I finally got them to replace my mobo / video card. a pain to send it in but it is working much better-- for now..

i'm having the same problem. How did you resolve this issue?

does anyone else get patches of "pixels" and then find it freezes, crashes, and then won't reboot?!

dude i think this is from ur video card....i have 8400 gs too and i get that same
I didn't do any overclocking. This happened with factory settings. Anyways, Dell replaced the video card (which means replacing the motherboard) and everything seems to be working fine.
