Some swimming drills have long out-lived their shelf life, such as dragging your thumbs along your torso. It leads to over-rotation, poor body position and can cause shoulder problems. Try a generously wide fingertip drag instead.
Fingertip drag is one of my favorite drills. It helps swimmers keep their shoulders from dropping and maintains stability and control. Most of all it helps them learn the relaxed recovery which can save them tons of energy in long yardage.

Look how wide his legs are spreading. That's probably a bigger problem than the one this drill attempts to correct.
