Twins of Evil (1971) is directed by John Hough ('The Legend of Hell House' and 'Escape to Witch Mountain').
In nineteenth century middle-Europe, Maria and Frieda, identical twins whose parents have recently died, move from Venice to Karnstein in Central Europe to live with their uncle Gustav Weill. Weill (Cushing) is also the leader of the Brotherhood, a group of religious fanatics trying to stamp out witchcraft and satanism, abducting several young women at night and burning them at the stake.
Both twins resent the sternness of their uncle and one of them, Frieda, looks for a way to escape. The real threat lies with Count Karnstein (Damien Thomas), and although the twins seem outwardly to be identical, Frieda finds herself fascinated by Karnstein, who has the reputation of being "a wicked man" and the Count's castle dominating the skyline.
The music is by Harry Robinson ('The Vampire Lovers', 'Lust for a Vampire' and 'Countess Dracula'). The powerful score, and the opening theme in particular, is memorable.
"The 'opening credits' has a strong and intense brass-based, almost military theme that is highly effective and manages to strike a balance between splendour and terror."

Trivia - both the Collinson Twins were dubbed.
Ingrid Pitt was offered the cameo role played by Katya Wyeth.
Hammer Film Productions used the same sets as Vampire Circus (1972).
The film was also known as 'The Gemini Twins', 'The Virgin Vampires', and 'Twins of Dracula'.

Locations for the filming were Black Park Country Park, Wexham, and Pinewood Studios, Iver Heath, both Buckinghamshire, England.

  • One of the best Hammer soundtrack for one of the later-era best Hammer films ! And surprisingly enough, it is not the work of James Bernard !

  • Not as dramatic as Frankenstein must be Destroyed, nevertheless the fine score by Robinson lends atmosphere and urgency to the proceedings.

    Thanks for your interesting comment.

  • Wasn't familiar with Harry Robinson. Sounds excellent. Great vid.

  • Thanks for your comment George.

    Also,Countess Dracula (1971),The Vampire Lovers (1970) and Lust for a Vampire (1971)

    Glad you enjoyed the vid.

  • Wow. This really does sound spookily of the Justice League theme song. But hey, if you're going to rip a song, why not do it from a Hammer film? *grin*

  • Thanks for the comment.

    Must look into this one.

  • This was such a fun film, part of the "Karnstein Trilogy", along with "Vampire Lovers" and "Lust For A Vampire". Peter Cushing was great, getting together other religious zealots and taking to the woods in search of the first well-endowed lass (OK, they ALL were well-endowed) so that they could burn her at the stake! (Marilyn and Madeline Collinson also posed nude for Playboy back in the day).

  • very well done...cool video.

  • Great theme from a great movie.

  • Unusually strong theme for a Hammer---at the time, I could have sworn it was by an Italian composer: It sounded like the theme for a spaghetti western, then quite popular on the Deuce [=42nd St/NYC] where I also saw this.

  • @campgalore cheeky girls?? lol but you're offending the movie! i'm ashamed they come from my country..but in my contry they are a discrace, two stupid girls that like to embarece themselfs

  • The Mike Batt Orchestra did a disco version of the TWINS OF EVIL theme.

  • @ThatNickGuy28 Yeah i was watching this movie for the first time last month, and that was the first thing i thought of!!! The guy that did the Justice League theme MUST have lifted some of the music from Harry Robertson's theme!! But like you said..if your gonna steal..Hammer is the best!

  • @deadman66684 Yeah the guy that did the Justice League lifted ALOT from this movie theme!
