I've discussed how I feel more "Deaf" when in settings where non-signing Hearing people are in the majority, while I do not feel "different" when I am among Deaf people. While thinking about that, I got to thinking about identity and how some Deaf have expressed a preference for the term "ASL person" rather than "Deaf". In this vlog, I explore the dynamics of identity and discuss why "ASL person" is still not correct for us to use.

  • Wow, you bring a valid point. However, language is a huge definer of culture and without it, I don't think what we know as te Deaf Culture today would be what it is. Also, the term 'ASL Person" incorporates a much larger group of people. If we share a common language can we be apart of the community (whether hearing (like myself) or D/deaf and if you're actively involved in the community)? I don't know, but I can understand both points though.
