He bombed legitimate military targets during his career, he did not bomb civilians.

2. He only lost 1 plane that can be realistically blamed on him. The first two crashed due to engine failure. The third he flew through power lines but never crashed. The fourth was lost due to the USS Forrestal fire. The fifth and the only one you can possibly "blame" him for was lost when he was hit by a NV SAM and he still managed to complete a bombing run on a NV power plant.
