I have started some distance work with Twix and teaching him to follow my body language. He will need this skill when we are out on the agility course. I am teaching him how to go out and around an object. Many think that one should not use a pole to send a dog around and I have not had a problem with this. My dogs know the difference between 1 weave pole and 12. So, I am not worried at all that this will ruin their weave poles. Here is a short tutorial on how to train this. You might need to use food to lure your dog around the first few times. My dogs all love to work for toys, so that is what I use. They will work for food, but would rather have toys. :)

I threw in some footage of Bandit doing the final product and variations of it. I also added a few tricks at the end, just for fun. :)

Enjoy!

Take care everyone!

  • I love this exercise, but I started working on it and my 8 month Aussie puppy won't run around the pole. She understands that she needs to go around the pole, but she will only trot. This happens whenever we try to do distance work. She is really fast and energetic when I run next to her or play fetch. Any suggestions on how I can get her to be more enthusiastic away from me during agility? Thank you so much!

  • @goodasgold133 Well, you could click and toss a toy as she is going toward the pole. If you used jumps to teach get out, you could toss a toy ahead of the last jump to get her to drive forward. Also, you could put a target out there for her to run toward or hold her back by her harness or at her shoulders to get her more excited to drive forward. Usually if they know the reward it out in front of them they will pick up speed. I hope that helps!

  • Amazing training! What kind of clicker do you use?

  • @MalteseAgility Thank you! I use a box clicker. Have a great day! Thank you so much for subscribing to my videos. :)

  • lol there is a cat at the end hehe

  • in agility dog.how do you differentiate the visual cues (arm movements) between a jump and an "out".?..in the sense that one arm straight ahead may seem a leap.

because during a course of agility in speed, it is important , the movement of the body , not so much the signal verbal

  • the command "get out" is used for jumping? equal to the right or left?

  • @goodasgold133 does something you want such as take a step towards the cone then you give her the toy/food. But until then the ONLY punishment she gets is not getting the toy.By growling the dog you will make it nervous so if you just dont say anything and only reward for wanted behaviour and not rewarding for "bad" behaviour you can build a high drive confident dog... Just my thoughts. I think you are a very good trainer Pam :) just thought id give another view! Also love you dogs!

  • @goodasgold133 reward stays exciting she will be enthused to do it. Remeber the reward is always given by you so when she goes around the cone say Yes and give her the food or toy. Make a huge fuss. It make take a while but you have to be patient if a dog is confident in something they will do it 100X better! There is good punishment. This is when the dog does not get the reward until it does something you want. Say the dog just stands there barking it doesnt get rewarded as soon as she does

  • @goodasgold133.the Chances are the value has changed for your dog. So you need to find something new and that excites her and she can only use or eat whilst training.Every time she takes a step closer to the pole reward her.Do NOT reward her for not advancing.Give her time and do not say anything to her. If she does nothing wait it out and remove any rewards form the area where you are working so she cannot self reward. eventually she will give in and do something with the cone as long as your

  • @goodasgold133 Personally instead of luring the dog I would let herthink for herself.lso known as "shaping".This teaches the dog to think for itself.have a cone or pole there and and wait for her to do anything and-even if she just sniffs it or just walk towards it then have a huge game with her favourite toy or give her her favourite food!Remember to make the reward seem like its the best thing in the world.

  • Awesome! :) I need to "mix it up" a little more with my puppy! THanks for posting :)

  • Great video! Bandit is so focused on you even though Sabrina and Isabelle walk past him in the end. :)
