  • A bit of an ignorant atiitude, its a shame that the constant quest for entertainment, (which is the purpose of flying really), comes at the potential expense of the planet and future generations security. But a typical 21st century Human has self interest at heart. Lets hope the cheap oil lasts out.

  • I wouldn't be surprised if these guys were just in the pay of BA or something, also your comments about the poor being used as pawns in moral debate is kinda ruined as the Maldives have now bought land (in I believe India or Malaysia) in case they do get flooded if sea levels rise. Hardly a country that can afford this sort of outlay.

  • Thank you for such a refreshing argument.

  • The ascent of Man to the skies is not a moral sin and will not sink Bangladesh. I wish people would stop using the poor of the developing world as pawns in the morality tale of climate change. Bangladeshis want modern life as much as we do here. And fortunately material development makes sense. The geographic expansion of modern living (incl. travel) is worth fighting for!

  • The freedom to travel in as far as we have it is a great achievement for technology and society. The new age climate moralists do not seem to value other peoples freedom or their own. More planes (and better technology) is the answer rather than don't fly as much. The climate change problems that there are will only be solved by bigger solutions than taking your holidays within walking distance.

  • Belittling the great leap forward flying around the world represents is sad. I would like people from the poorest parts of the world to be able to see it all too and that means many more planes flights and runways. The global warming fears have become a disgraceful way of cutting back on human freedom and progress. Why not put more thought into better cheaper planes and cleaner and more energy and stop belittling our potential to fly, to get together and do great things.

  • I'm all for the 3rd runway. If it makes it easier, and cheeper to travel, then go for it. And if it becomes cheaper to fly, then more people will have the opportunity to travel the world. Can't see that as a problem.

  • Indeed, this small-minded man seems to think that we in the rich part of the world have a right to travel by whatever means we choose to whatever part of the world we choose as often as we choose. The only 'rights' that we really have are those enshrined in the UDHR, the first of which is the right to life. That right is denied to an estimated 150,000 people per year due to the human contribution to climate change, yet young Alec thinks the right to fly more is more important.

  • If you also think this man's reasoning is selfish und ultimately destructive, please stand with the Campaign Against Climate Change on:

Thursday 19th February 5.30pm opposite Downing Street, Westminster, London.

  • I've also read his statistic of 3% of global emissions caused by flying, but the truth is that if the third runway is built at Heathrow, it will become the biggest emitter in the country. The reason the campaigners are standing against this proposal and making so much noise is because it is so easily avoidable. We don't feel we have a right to make this planet uninhabitable for the poorest people in the world. We are so lucky as it is.
