Leonard Cohen uses alot of religious metaphors, it may not necessarily be the case.

I got the vibe that the song may be about Bipolar Disorder,
"When I am not this hunchback that you see,
I sleep beneath the golden hill."

when Jesus is carrying the cross he is hunched over. And after his death he is placed in a tomb which is under a hill.

Hmm, true. Although, I thought it was meant to represent the dramatic mood swings one has with manic depression - it could well be a double metaphor that could mean both our interpretations, since Mr Cohen tends to write alot of religious metaphor. Am I making any sense? :P

But nonetheless, it's still a bloody fantastic song.
