The Irish Potato Blight of 1845 caused one of the biggest mass exoduses in history. Within five years, a million Irish were dead and half a million had crossed the wide Atlantic in search of a crust of bread and a new life.

According to Census figures the population of Ireland was 8.2 million in 1841, but only 6.6 million a decade later, and only 4.7 million by 1891. It is estimated that as many as 4.5 million Irish arrived in America between 1820 and 1930.

The Irish constituted over one third of all immigrants to the United States in the period 1820-1860.
