John Lennon performs the Number one hit Uncle Albert - Admiral Halsey

Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" is a song by Paul and Linda McCartney from the album Ram. Released in the United States as a single on 2 August 1971, it reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1971. The song is probably the most ambitious and experimental track on Ram, and is less a song and more a collection of melodic fragments pieced together, in a similar way to the song-cycle on the second half of The Beatles' Abbey Road. McCartney won the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalists in 1971 for the song.

The song is noted for its sound effects, including the sound of thunder, lightning, and rain, heard between the first and second verse, the sound of a telephone dialing, and a message machine, heard after the second verse, and a sound of chirping sea birds and wind by the seashore. Linda's voice is heard in the harmonies as well as the bridge section of the "Admiral Halsey" portion of the song.

McCartney said "Uncle Albert" was based on his uncle. "He's someone I recall fondly, and when the song was coming it was like a nostalgia thing." McCartney also said, "As for Admiral Halsey, he's one of yours, an American admiral", referring to Admiral William "Bull" Halsey

  • John would not have wasted his time, stoned or not, if he didn't really like and admire the song. John was just as big a music fan as any of us, probably the biggest McCartney fan, and he could hear the brilliance in Paul's tune. He most likely wished he had been on the recording! peace and love...

  • it's funny, John Lennon is making fun of Paul's songs, yet he has to know them well enough to do so.

Of what? He seems to be having fun and enjoying a good tune.

  • Is he being ironical??µI find it very funny, but I prefer Paul's version.

  • Funny how he knows all the chords and calls them out!

  • @TURTLEBOY47

    Totally true...

  • Cool I've never head John do a McCartney song! Guess he was in a great mood that night!

  • paul and john may have had a feud-but at least they bought each others records!

  • I really think he was just having fun. I've heard other stuff from this same tape and he does all the songs in a jokey manner (if you listen at the very end of this he's doing a piss take on my sweet lord too) People read too much into these things
