(This video is a companion piece to our comprehensive interactive feature at http://www.gmanews.tv/story/193261/old-manila-photos-show-what-the-war-destroyed)

In 1946, a photographer named Teodulo Protomartir took a series of striking images of what was then the rubble of post-war Manila. The images were lost for more than sixty-years until they were rediscovered by TV director and film aficionado Uro dela Cruz. GMANews.TV teamed up with famed Manila tour guide Carlos Celdran to take photographs of the same places as they appear today.

  • such a great tragedy but the good thing is that we are becoming aware of what happend almost 70 yrs ag.. once touted as the greatest and most beautiful city in the far east... now it has fallen to second the motion trying to be american lost city..

i hope you manila can still wait.. because officials are still not ready to take care and pampered you..

  • Good job !

  • What they did in 65 Years - Triangle de Amore - Jose Rizal - are you Filipinos ? Or Devils ? Spain - America - Asia - es el Triangle de Amore - you don't need Love - go to Hell !!! Daddy Frank - Free Childs of God -

  • @evancortez2: Not to mention that the original Manileños have died out; most of them during the war. What populate Manila now are nothing but vile, uneducated, brutish, uncultured vermin from the provinces. They have no idea of Manila's history, nor even try to learn it simply because they have no connection to Manila. That is why we see squatters everywhere, or heritage sites being demolished to give way for malls and condopartments.

  • and please keep the whites who are only there for sex with the pinay women (u know it happens) away. they are evil and selfish. money is not the answer to happiness and please respect our women and dont let them fall to slavery of the sex trade just to feed their family.

i have so much to say but not enuff words to say it. i am filipino american born in new york city.

my connection to the philippines may be lost with my parents. which is sad in itself.

  • the worst is teh western influence on the people of the philippines. teh americans are probably the most uncultured people on the planet with no customs other than money and self-centeredness. not family. pinoys are the opposite---which is a natural human feeling/condition. please keep teh history of the philippines as one cannot know where they are going unless they know where they came from.

  • excellent video...

  • I'm not surprised that many Filipinos don't realize that Manila was complately destroyed after WWII. That's why wala tayong asenso, we don't remember our past so wer'e doomed to repeat the same mistakes over and over again.
