This is a side of Childhood Cancer that people often forget about - The siblings of the patient. The siblings are with their sister, or brother for every step of treatment. Sometimes, they can't be there. Most Pediatric Cancer hospitals or units don't allow kids to visit their sibling or friend during flu season, so they will be separated from each other for months at a time. They get half the attention, but twice the worry. The siblings of children with cancer suffer too. Let's not forget about them.

"Spencer, for example, was never anything but loving toward her sister. When we had to pull over on the ride to the Renaissance Festival for Quinn to throw up (thanks, chemo) Spencer was quick to suggest that she didn't care that much about the festival anyway — when I knew she cared very much.
When Spencer began to express interest in attending the School of Science and Math in Durham, my initial thought was "No! What will Quinn do without her? What will we do without her?"
But then it hit me: Spencer had been a good and faithful sister and daughter. She had sacrificed a lot because of her sister's cancer — although of course Quinn has by far given up the most." - A mother of a child with cancer (Quinn) on the effects of the sibling (Spencer).

"A significant loss for me was when my mom was unable to attend my annual dance recital for the first time in years. Families diagnosed with caner suffer many losses, including day to day happenings that otherwise may be overlooked." -A sibling

  • 3 years ago, my sister was diagnosed with leukemia. I know firsthand what this is like. On my birthday, my sister was in the hospital with my mother. My friend's parents had to host my birthday party. This is exactly what I went through, and still continue to go through. Anger, guilt, fear, jealousy. Don't forget about the siblings.
