According to a 2008 Gallup poll, 44 % of Americans believe "God created human beings pretty much in their present form at one time within the last 10,000 years or so." 36 % believe the world IS old but God guided evolution. 14 % believe in old world and no involvement by God.

@MastroCicio The Jewish Bible was "put together" from earlier texts and oral traditions during the Hellenistic period. Of course much of it was written before it was "put together".

@MastroCicio the old testament was not written before the hellenistic period .....SOME of the "oral" traditions that eventually made part of the OT existed during the hellenistic period , but the OT as we know it was written down roughly between 300 bc at earliest up till about 100 bc .

Chompsky is a great mind, but how can he reconcile religious belief and rationality? This seems irrational. A linguist should understand that, although it's easy enough to say that there's no conflict between these two poles, that that doesn't constitute a good argument.
