This is not a good demonstration of basic listening skills? The "counselor" is a parrot, and does not show that he even understands what she's saying, but merely hearing what she's saying. If he wants to paraphrase in order to understand, he should ask a question. I would not go to this counselor, but then again, maybe it's just the beginning of the session.

@stealthvsion In some parts of the world college and university are interchangable, just so ya know.

That is not even good paraphrasing he's almost just parroting back what's been said which makes it seem like he's trying to prove that he's not being lulled to sleep. LOL
There is a big difference between a college and a university. One could easily misinterpret his paraphrase as a downgrade of her intelligence. I know this might sound a little knit-picky but this is how real people with real responses are going to react. Most people are not in therapy because they're thick skinned.
