Gilbert and Sullivan operattas are so quintessiantially English......only England could produce such delights as the lyrics contained in this piece from HMS Pinafore, and that goes for all the rest of them, such as "I am the Very Model of a Modern Major General" from "The Pirates of Penzance" - to sing those words at great speed takes enormous skill, quite untranslatable into any other language - only in English is it effective. I go to Buxton, Derbyshire, each year for the G & S Festival.

@dennykdoe Very true actually.
This is a good example of why G&S don't translate easily into other languages---whoever does the lyrics has to be as good as Gilbert, because he has so many puns and other verbal tricks....like that marvelouis couplet "they soon took me into the partnership....but that kind of ship so suited me, that now I am, etc." It all depends on the double meaning of "--ship", and that's peculiar to English only. So they remain a treasure of the English speaking peoples.
