Bloody brilliant technique!

My buildings are all made from foam core which, to be honest, is a right farce to build ruins, I'm going to be using Extruded Polystyrene from now on...

pretty sure the name your looking for is jig. A shim is what you shove under things to make them level or to adjust the height slightly.

please will u tell me where u get your polystirine from i need some to do somthing like this but i cant find it any where

@terrainaholic You need to put in a lot more work to finish them to a comparable standard to your style of ruins. Extruded polystyrene has a surface texture similar to concrete and you don't need to cover up the edges like foam core to stop it from looking crummy.

Hey Bill. I never thought of making the template (shim?) out of foam. I was thinking of using lego for templates. Doh, as always the obvious escapes me and I look for the complicated solution.
