Fields of Athenry - the Lyrics

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young girl calling
Micheal they are taking you away
For you stole Trevelyn's corn
So the young might see the morn.
Now a prison ship lies waiting in the bay.

Chorus
Low lie the Fields of Athenry
Where once we watched the small free birds fly.
Our love was on the wing
we had dreams and songs to sing
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

By a lonely prison wall
I heard a young man calling
Nothing matters Mary when you're free,
Against the Famine and the Crown
I rebelled they ran me down
Now you must raise our child with dignity.

Chorus

By a lonely harbour wall
She watched the last star falling
As that prison ship sailed out against the sky
Sure she'll wait and hope and pray
For her love in Botany Bay
It's so lonely 'round the Fields of Athenry.

  • @slamdunk011094 Brian O' Donnell.

he was 11 at the time.

  • he actully amazing dose any one know his name

  • @ImperialistRunningDo Yeah. They import them from South America to help pick the potatoes.

  • @TheTrevelyansway Botany Bay was a port in Australia. The British convicts were allowed to wander free there, which is the reason why the Aborigine race died out.

A few prisoners escaped to China, but not many. You just had to live your life out in Australia.

What's worse is that even if you had served your sentence, you probably would've had to wait for a few extra years for a ship to take you home because they arrived so rarely.

Just a few little facts :)

  • Imagine stealing basic grain to feed your family being caught and sent to prison for life never to see your family again. Wondering till the end whether they survived the famine while you sat in prison. My Lord times can be tough. Governments and authority can be cruel. These are the times that try men's souls.

  • this song gives me chills and makes the hair stand on the back of my neck makes me proud to be irish

  • @jch67ess His name is Brian O'Donnell... and he's not a child anymore.
