Independent fright filmmaker, and Full Moon Pictures veteran Danny Draven has a new book that was released today called: THE FILMMAKER'S BOOK OF THE DEAD: How To Make Your Own Heart-Racing Horror Film. The tome, which Draven has been quietly working on for the past year, is a full-on educational tool for young moviemakers attempting to dive into the horror world. The book has a foreword and extensive interview with Full Moon president Charles Band, and is also loaded with amazing Full Moon imagery. Draven has over a 10 year history of making movies with Charles Band and Full Moon.

With over 320 full color pages, THE FILMMAKER'S BOOK OF THE DEAD explores everything from the history of the genre to preproduction, shooting and distribution, and features a host of filmmakers and actors dishing out advice on finding success in the field. Among the interview subjects are such iconic genre figures as Robert Englund, Stuart Gordon, SAWs James Wan, Tom Savini, Tromas Lloyd Kaufman (Toxic Avenger), special FX artist Robert Kurtzman, Godfather of Gore Herschell Gordon Lewis, David DeCoteau (Puppetmaster 3), Charles Band, Reggie Bannister (Phantasm), Chuck Williams (Bubba Ho-Tep), Debbie Rochon, and so many more. There is also a book companion website featuring samples of contracts, scripts, schedules, lists of distributors and horror film festivals, and tons of video and behind the scenes footage, including some classics from the Full Moon library.

After making a lot of indie films and hanging around their producers every day of my life, I was drawn to the laptop to write my experiences down, Draven tells us. If you are interested in making a low-budget horror movie, or any low-budget movie at all, I wrote this for you. The goal is to help filmmakers avoid the pitfalls and guide them with real-world advice. Its also a good read for fans of the genre.

While the various members of the horror elite represented in BOOKs pages are Dravens heroes too, he notes that this experience wasnt about having the chance to meet them, but to compile worthwhile and interesting experience-driven lessons. Everyone imparted a generous amount of knowledge and experience to the book, he says. Its not interview-based, but I talked to some great folks to spice it up a bit and add perspective. These are not fanboy interviews at all; rather, they are very specific to filmmaking. For example, Robert Englund tells us what he expects from a filmmaker, James Wan talks directing and storyboarding, Stuart Gordon discusses working with actors, [THE DESCENTs] Sam McCurdy talks horror cinematography, Reggie Bannister and John D. LeMay get into acting, Robert Kurtzman gives us indie filmmaking advice and his fake blood recipe, Full Moon gurus Charles Band and David DeCoteau talk producing, International Horror and Sci-Fi Film Festival gives film festival tips, [CABIN FEVERs] Nathan Barr talks about horror-movie music, Herschell Gordon Lewis discusses marketing and Lloyd Kaufman talks distribution. There are so many more.

The book was published by Focal Press and released on January 8th, 2010. It's now available from your favorite bookseller in stores or online now!
