Matt Bruner, Conservation Officer with the Iowa DNR with some tips for safe boat operation. When two vessels are traveling over 5 mph they must stay at least 50 feet apart. If one of the vessels is traveling under 5mph or stopped the distance between the vessels must be at least 100 feet. Always operate in safe mannor with regards to not only the safety of your passengers, but also the safety of those around you. When meeting another vessel, the vessel on the right, or starboard side, has the right of way. With these tips you can have a safe boating season. Visit www.iowadnr.gov for more information.
