A classic Johnny Carson moment (1976) was when he came back from vacation and his guest host, Don Rickles, had broken his cigarette box. Rickles was actually filming a TV show at the same time as The Tonight Show was taping. Johnny actually took the camera, live, and barged in on the set, surprising Rickles and the entire crew. For once, it was Rickles who was speechless!

  • please keep in mind that this is 1976 at 11:30pm at night after all the kids have gone to bed and yes jokes like that would not go over well in today's PC world. Just put it in a time capsule and realize it was what it was and let it go. There are more important things in this world to worry about than a youtube video of an old show..

  • Gosh that cotton mill joke was bad! Lol such a different time back then. If a white guy made a crack like that in today's world he's be strung up.

  • @UncleMilo

"to the heart and mind, ignorance is kind. there's no comfort in the truth."

  • @UncleMilo do a little research kind sir and you will find that there was plenty of outrage and the man you refer to was quite disgusted with the "joke". It is considered by many, including myself, as the worst moment in a long and otherwise distinguished career.

  • voa tv, that's funny. Here, let me do one. Op tv. Get it? LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLO

  • @kevcas73 Thanks for your fake outrage. Most people understood... the guy who Carson was making jokes at was even laughing... but do please go on pretending you're important... but I assure you that you are made of fail.

  • What an absolute joy to see the opening with the NBC peacock and the music that went with it. God, we're all getting a bit older...aren't we? I can remember having only a black and white tv as a kid, and going to other kid's homes who had color tv's. I'd see the NBC peacock in all it's multi-color glory...and try to memorize which colors were on each "feather", and then watch it on our old black and white and try to picture what colors went where. I was 38 yrs. old at the time. No, not really.

  • How ironic that one of the guests was Jay Leno. Think that Jay could ever get the better of Rickles like this?

  • I just love how Johnny was able to turn an unexpected moment on the show into a funny moment. He is indeed the King of Late Night.

  • "Millions of dollars? What are you doing with the money? This can't be it!"

    "They know who I am!"

  • @kevcas73 If you think this is bad, check out "Black White Supremist Dave Chappelle Complete" on youtube. You will really shit!
