Bill Maher is not in any position to be the spokesperson for either the existance of god or the contrary. He has no idea what he's talking about and uses editing tactics similar to Michael Moore to make intelligent people appear incredibly dim. Dr. Collins is a brilliant man who mapped out the human genome consisting of 3.1 billion letters in DNA code creating an instruction manual for the make up of the human being. I'd listen to what he has to say.

@TexasSailor01 I'm not confused. Atheism is not a rigid set of beliefs like religion. Most 'purebreed' atheists I've met and talked to are simply rejecting the religious beliefs available to them. Atheism is born from a feeling of skepticism and a desire to learn more. Believe what you will, as I haven't anymore drive to argue this anymore. Maher, by the way, is the same. He does not claim to know that there is no God, he just doesn't believe in what has been presented to him.

@turtlesarecool99 One quick thought. I enjoy Maher, but if he doesn't claim to know that there is no God, then perhaps he should not be making a movie marketing that same view. Per logical principles not unrelated to Pascal's Wager, evangelical atheism--as opposed to regular atheism and agnosticism--should not exist. And of course, religious folk should be expected to act with reasonable civility to others about their own beliefs. Life goes on.

@turtlesarecool99 Yeah IMHO that is a far more respectful position than a hard atheist, for the reasons I listed above. I can't speak for Mahr, but Hitchens described himself as an anti theist and Dawkins is quite proud of being militantly atheist. That I don't think is nearly of defensible position.

@jimbo525SE Look up the term agnostic-atheist. The contemporary atheist movement is comprised of these types of people, whether they identify themselves properly or not. Atheism itself is not a belief system, just as theism is not a belief system. Neither are a religion and most are not properly identified as what they truly are. Maher and most of the modern atheist movement is made up of agnostic-atheists because it's centered around the idea of unknowing.

@turtlesarecool99 I don't know if you have gotten a response yet or not, but if I fit that description I would define myself as an agnostic, as atheism is a positive statement saying that God does not exist.

@DZ252 If I'm feeling a bit trollish, I like to tease "smart" people who are either atheistic or agnostic. Would you like me to share my religious beliefs? PS Josephus AD 90, Pliny the Younger 112, Tacitus AD 115, and Suetonius AD 120 were pagan historians. Their confirmation suggests that Jesus was quite real.

Dude, Maher is not even on the same intellectual map as Collins. Bill Maher has no idea what he is talking about concerning the Gospels - other than what he has heard from popular Atheist garble.
