This audio (with screenshot slideshow) is from Franchot Tone's 1957 film of Chekhov's "Uncle Vanya." In an acclaimed performance as the self-proclaimed "odd" Dr. Astroff, Tone delivers this well-known monologue (originally written in 1897) that presages later attitudes about environmental concerns. While Astroff is a country doctor, his heart is planted in his ongoing efforts to replenish Russia's forests, though he observes that "God alone knows what is our real calling." The film was adapted from a concurrent off-Broadway production and is now available on DVD.
