I really wonder how ignorant would the western media remain??? All they show of Indian Railways are the crowds and the slow speed. Aren't the western countries railways stations crowded too? Check out the London tube and half of us would croak out of sheer breathlessness with amount of people crowding the stations! Respected journalists act quite naive when it comes to portraying the Indian Railways!. I wonder why this journalist didn't capture the prestigious trains like the palace on wheels?

@dimax997: Not really! Most of the long distance trains in the last few years have their doors closed after sunset except at stations and also accompanied by security personals doing a regular patrolling all along the route in the train. Things have changed and changed for good. After all. Indian Railways is one of the largest employer in the world, and trust me, if you would look at the distances covered with the total number of trains run, Indian Railways is actually doing a fab job.

yes..and people often make their entire journey clinging onto the open doors..especially in the local trains..

The doors are open during the route? 0_o

Simon Robinson shows again why (almost) illiterate people can be journalists. Anyone with a basic knowledge of arithmetic and some common sense can see that the efficiency of a transport system would depend on
1. speed
2. price
LOL for leaving the price out of the equation. Indian Railways gets the stick for having low speed. Wow... did Simon take, like real classes in school or was it the standard bullcrap arts/humanities stuff?

Slow it sure can be, but cockroaches, I haven't seen any in years. Not sure which particular train or section you are talking about, but that is a thing of past in most places & trains on Indian Railways, thanks to recent initiatives to maintain hygienic travel conditions.
