Purple Martin house on a converted basketball goal post and a Blue Bird house modified to trap house sparrows that broke open the Blue Bird eggs and tossed them out of the nest. I got mad and I got even.

  • Thanks for your collaborative effort to rid the world of this pest. I will check out the Van Ert trap and see if I can order some. I put up my Martin house this week in preparation. The little brown rats (sparrows) are already laying claim. If I can't shoot them with my pellet rifle; I find great pleasure in removing a nest full of their eggs.

  • No wonder the rest of the world hates Yanks

  • @TheYeltzman If the rest of the World hates Yanks, why do we have such a problem with illegal aliens? Seems that those who hate us are those who want to live here, but can't. It is my opinion that we are going to the dogs because of Obama and and all of the Godless people who managed to get here since WW 2. Regarding the sparrows: I have no problem with English Sparrows because they are English, but because they kill Purple Martins and Bluebirds and take over my birdhouse.

  • I am not much of an artist so will have to make a video of each part to show how it was made I guess. I started with a basic Blue Bird house and tried to figure out how to modify it to create a spring-loaded sliding trap, I will work on the video and get it posted soon.

  • I have two air rifles but my wife doesn't like for me to be shooting in the neighborhood and the scope always needs adjusting and I have missed frequently. I have a new home-made Martin house this year that is closer to my window and I have picked of several that way but I also have put several holes in my birdhouse.

  • Speaking as a bluebirder of over 20 years, I will kill every house sparrow I come in contact with. I can't use my .22 rifle in most places, so I use a boxtrap that my late-neighbor made and have just purchased three new Van Ert traps. Can't wait to use them on the flying pestilence known as the house sparrow. They've killed too many of my bluebirds/tree swallows, so I'm equalizing the score. I hope they decline to extinction the world-over. If you love them, keep them. In my range, they're dead.

  • Good. Going! !!

  • You must have a lot of time on your hands to do this

  • glue traps work well. If a sparrow is taking up residence, place a glue trap in the nest. It won't take you 5 minutes to catch it and then you can get rid of it. You want to capture and kill the male. Once he's gone, the nest will be abandoned. If you kill the female, the male will just attract another mate to the nest.

  • @quickshooter100 yeah, sparrows in GENERAL are great birds. but not the non-native House Sparrow who kills all our bluebirds. in its own habit the House Sparrow is fine. But not here. I'm sorry - but exterminate them in North America with no remorse nor pity. Its either them, or the bluebirds, and the last time I checked, those two birds don't know how to share or compromise, and the bluebirds were here FIRST. I'm going to go shoot some House Sparrows right now actually. Good riddance @ssholes!
