March 23rd, 2009 - Another great success for our chase team as we were on the best cell in Kansas and Oklahoma and witnessed an intense and sudden funnel cloud development out of a supercell near Arkansas City, KS. This has been labeled as a rotating wall cloud but at this point I am ready to argue this can be better characterized as a funnel cloud based on its rapid development, proximity to the ground and the location of the occurrence (RFD wraps around intense inflow into the updraft right in front of us). This video captures the entire development and dissipation of the event. This was reported on four different counts as a tornado, but I do not see evidence in my video to confirm/deny that claim. Seeing as how we had a GREAT vantage point and saw the entire event, I believe that this was only a funnel cloud(VERY near to touching down). Check out more of the chase in Part II. Video Credit: Nick Engerer and Owen Shieh. Other members of the chase team were Chip Redmond and Nicholas Brammer. In the Follow Vehicle: Craig Schwartz, Nick Gasperoni, Nate Lehman and Todd Kluber.

  • @oxobrianoxo bazillion is NOT A REAL NUMBER!

  • It is crazy to think that this was just a year ago.. and almost to the date... and we have snow on the ground 5 inches deep... I hate kansas weather!

  • Yeah! That's my hometown! I'd like to take a moment to point out that the name of the town is pronounced AR - KANSAS CITY. It is not pronounced like the state of Arkansas. Thank you.
