This is an extremely rare recording of the Washington Post March, a patriotic march composed by John Philip Sousa, recorded during its release year, 1890, and played by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band. It is track 12 of the John Philip Sousa album, "Sousa Original", which is played entirely by the United States Marine Band.

  • I think this is the oldest hit recording I've ever found on YouTube, or anywhere else. Thanks!

  • Excuse me. This was not a patriotic march. Souza wrote it on commission for a newspaper, The Washington Post. He made a bunch of side money doing commercial composition. Most newspapers had "paper boy bands" and their own marches back then. The Post hired Souza to write theirs. The (now defunct) Washington Even Star and other newspapers hired lesser composers, and nobody remembers their marches now.

  • It's often hard to tell if recordings of this age are being played at the right speed, though. I suspect that this one may be slightly slower than it's supposed to be, at least in the beginning.

  • Thanks! I have been looking for this recording since I lost the CD that had it.
