  • When questioned in later life about, his( the Hawk's) bass sax playing,he said after hearing Rollini on the instrument he felt humble and inferior

  • They were both very good along with Jimmy Dorsey.

  • A great arrangement. I enjoy the early Hendersons - not keen on many of his later recordings. Here the Hawk really made that bass sax sing.

  • I like early Ellington such as "The Mooche" and "East St. Louis Toodle Doo".I have never seen Earth,Wind+Fire.

  • I agree. I saw Return to Forever in 1974, Stanley and Lenny were so hot and listening to the early, first recordings of Ellington I hear that kind of fire. Later on the fire wasn't as hot but they were more polished and slick. The early, first recordings of stuff like "In a Sentimantal Mood" were, to me, way better than the later slick stuff. Sonny Greer was a great, great drummer. I'd have to say that Ellington's early band and Earth, Wind and Fire are probably the best bands I've heard.

  • You're welcome Masquerade,I'll do some more mint recordings in a little bit.

  • Do a google search and something will pop up if it's not copyrighted.

  • Wonderful!

    Thanks for sharing.

    PS

I agree with your take on Duke Ellington.

  • You mean there are a lot of videos with Smack from the thirtys. I have never seen any. Do you know where is one to see?

  • That period of time(1924-1930) is when these bands were at their best. The same with Duke Ellington, his early music is my favorite.
