I like early Ellington such as "The Mooche" and "East St. Louis Toodle Doo".I have never seen Earth,Wind+Fire.

I agree. I saw Return to Forever in 1974, Stanley and Lenny were so hot and listening to the early, first recordings of Ellington I hear that kind of fire. Later on the fire wasn't as hot but they were more polished and slick. The early, first recordings of stuff like "In a Sentimantal Mood" were, to me, way better than the later slick stuff. Sonny Greer was a great, great drummer. I'd have to say that Ellington's early band and Earth, Wind and Fire are probably the best bands I've heard.

That period of time(1924-1930) is when these bands were at their best. The same with Duke Ellington, his early music is my favorite.
When questioned in later life about, his( the Hawk's) bass sax playing,he said after hearing Rollini on the instrument he felt humble and inferior

They were both very good along with Jimmy Dorsey.

A great arrangement. I enjoy the early Hendersons - not keen on many of his later recordings. Here the Hawk really made that bass sax sing.
