This is the semifinal, heat 1, run 2 of the Jeep 48Straight Mountain Bike Series at Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo, CA on October 25, 2008. It's a dual slalom format so the riders do two runs, once on each of the left and right courses. A rider can never have more than a 1.5 second deficit after each run. Best of two runs wins the heat. In this semifinal second run, Brian Lopes (in the blue helmet) is on the Blue Course with a 0.49 second advantage, and Jared Rando is on the red course. The winner goes to the finals.

Since you can't see the finish, Lopes wins this run by 0.13 seconds and goes to the final against Eric Carter where he beats Eric Carter. But Eric Carter (who designed and built this course) was the lead in the point totals from the 3 stops of the series and becomes the series winner.

BTW, Brian Lopes is running on a hardtail Ibis Tranny ( http://www.ibiscycles.com/mountain/tranny/ ) with a flat pedal setup (no clips). All the other riders were running clipped-in

  • Who won?

  • Brian Lopes won this race. Lopes ended up outlasting his friend and rival Eric Carter in the final to win the individual event title at San Luis Obispo, but Carter earned the season championship based on this race and previous stops in New Jersey and Utah.

Melissa Buhl won the event title and the season championship for the women.

  • TreeMunchies, the track is (was?) near the bottom of the southern slope of Madonna Mountain (Cerro San Luis) in that little valley between Madonna and the smaller hill that the Madonna Inn butts up against. It's about 200 yards west of that big white conference center building for the Madonna Inn. I'm pretty sure it's on Madonna Inn private land, but you should be able to see what's left from the road up Madonna Mountain.
