The easiest way to understand what Master Control can offer a producer is to split it into it's three main function sections:

Audio Interface
The Alesis Mastercontrol is a fully equipped, professional quality, 24-bit, 192kHz, high-resolution, low-latency audio interface. Equipped for nearly any input type, it's rear panal features 8 analogue inputs. The first two of these inputs are XLR connections with high-definition microphone preamps, 48V phantom power, and channel inserts. The other analogue inputs are balanced 1/4" TRS jacks, which can be used simultaneously with inputs 1 and 2. MasterControls input section can be expanded to handle up to 24 simultaneous inputs, including dual ADAT Lightpipe, coaxial, and optical S/PDIF. Six analog outputs allow for the connection of audio monitoring systems and external recording devices, and a 16-channel MIDI interface enables connection of external MIDI devices, further extending MasterControls already impressive I/O capabilities. All data is transferred to your computer via a low-latency FireWire connection (Mac or PC compatible). Just this one single cable carries all of your audio and control data from the Master Control to your computer.

Control Surface
MasterControl is also a fully equipped controller surface, allowing for easy hands-on mixing and editing of your music, as well as control over the assignable aspects of your software. Master Control features 9 motorised, touch-sensitive, 100mm faders, 8 assignable knobs (accessing three control banks each) and two banks of eight assignable buttons (accessing two control banks each). These multiple banks of assignable controllers enable access to over a staggering 50 software parameters in real time! You also get fully comprehensive transport controls with a multifunction jog wheel.

Control Room Management
Built-in speaker switching means that the MasterControl enables you to switch between multiple sets of monitor loudspeakers, essential for when you're checking the accuracy of a mix. The 6 analogue outputs are grouped into 3 assignable stereo pairs. Master Controls direct monitor routing offers a flexible way of assigning audio sources through any and all of these output pairs. If that wasn't enough for you, the Alesis MasterControl also features twin, independently assignable stereo headphone outputs (each with independent gain controls) and a built-in talkback microphone, which enables easy communication with musicians in your live room. The talkback mic can be operated via the control panel or an optional footswitch. Realtime visual display of all your actions is shown on a large, backlit screen.

Alesis's Mastercontrol really is a producer's dream come true, offering absolutely everything you could want from a control surface and audio interface, tying your setup together with one simple unit...it even comes with bundled copies of Steinberg's Cubase LE 4 and Ableton's Live Lite 7.

This works well with ProTools.

Scrubbing Audio: It will let you hear the audio as you move playhead (by using the jog wheel) The playback speed will depend upon how fast of slow you move the jog wheel. It will go backwards and forwards and lets you hear what is going on at the same time.
