  • Argentina invaded British territory. I say Maggie did the right thing by going to way and sinking that ship. I wonder how close she came to using a nuclear weapon?

  • @mchap38834 Interesting you mention that actually. When the records were opened a couple of years ago it emerged that the subs had a nuclear weapon still loaded on them, as they hadn't had time to be off-loaded before the subs were deployed to the region. However, the ex-PM said she would never have used it under any circumstance during the conflict.

  • @Tonyo1221 ...in response to a military invasion of a place whose people wanted to remain under the auspices of the UK, by a nation under a fascist, military dictatorship? Not really.

  • The further we get away from the eighties, she's getting more admirers than detractors. Even those who were anti-Thatcher are starting to see aspects of the woman they can admire. A very flawed human being, but in a practical sense she was inspiring.

  • she was a war monger

  • @spenceAMS

Argentina is not an enemy worth a nuclear weapon.

The Falklands were originally Argentinian, but for the last 150 years, Britain maintained the sovereignty, and the Islands have been inhabited by a good number of British people, who insisted on staying British.

International conventions make Britain's claim on the Islands very strong indeed.

But, if Britain gave the Islands away, it would have been another matter.

  • Britain did nothing wrong in her handling of the Falklands. They were originally an Argentine territory, but Britain maintained her sovereignty for more than 150 years, during which Argentina only submitted her claim in statements.

The people of the Islands were mostly British, and they wanted remain British. Argentinian case was therefore very weak, and Mrs T had every reason to be optimistic about her confidence in legal status of Britain.

  • Dictators must be beaten.

As an iraqi speaking, this is Marget Thatcher Gold! I wish we can have a tenth of her leadership in iraq.

  • What did that archbishop say,

    jingoistic?

im sorry, get your head on britain was defending ITS OWN LAND from the argentine dictatorship.

in no way or shape is britain the next nazi empire seeking to control the lands of others by which jingoism implies.

    britain won the war,

far better to celebrate a victory than a defeat

  • Francis Pym was a complete 'sell out' of our own people. Thank God Margaret was so tough .AND stood up to the USA.
