successfulbuild, I don't know where you got your figure of 5-6% unemployment under FDR. Perhaps this was during the war. War spending and the destruction of European industry got the US out of the depression. Roosevelt's job was to convince the American workers they had common interests with the capitalists, to prepare them for the coming war for an American empire which would give US capitalism global dominance.
Generally in the US the debate since the American Revolution has been who controls the federal government, and for what purposes. When corporations start to control the government, and have access, with no help for the working classes, we have rising inequality that leads to depressions and recessions. And when there are recessions the rich throw people out of work to prevent a loss of profits. Without massive govt. intervention, this can become a depression. That's another flaw of capitalism
LOl. The greatest scientific advancements and achievements was the computing industry, done AFTER 'heavy regulation.'
Capitalism cannot sustain itself. It relies on big government, the federal government, to protect it. Over 20 of the fortune 100 companies have been saved from complete disaster by the government and all of them have benefitted in some ways by government policies.
Actually you ignoramous the government has historically funded HALF of all expenditures into R&D, and the corporations who are prominent in each of the fields, like AT&T, boeing, etc, are corporations that have taken a huge amount of corporate welfare. Free-enterprise has never done shit for the workers.
Umm, ignoramous, all empires DID have slavery. That's a common theme of all empires, and it certainly was common in the establishment of the US. And yes, US foreign policy essentially continued financial slavery in the third world, and this is continued by policies of the IMF and world bank who lean money to countries in exchange for access to their sources. This creates 'dollar imperialism.'
Of course, the US is also starting to fail as an empire, largely because of its financial problems.
Of course, FDR wasn't liberal enough. While he got unemployment down to around 5-6% if you count the government employed workers, he didn't do enough to stimulate weak demand. Like most presidents, a lot of his policies were corporatist in nature. Latin America was considered 'our region,' etc., but that's what capitalist countries do, exploit others.
