A lyrebird that startled me while I was photographing Sherbrooke Falls. Apparently (she) saw fit to make a bunch of (boring bird) noise to warn its nearby mate of my being there.
EDIT: Thanks to the comments for pointing out that it is a female and not a male.

  • she is a female, thats why she isn't imitating other bird calls. the males do that as part of their mating ritual.

  • @zhivana ahh right you are! thanks for pointing that out :D

  • Wasn't that a female? The males have longer tails for display and do the mimicking sounds to attract the female. Maybe that is why this video was boring, because it is a female.

  • @svrwthr Yeah right you are thanks for pointing that out, sorry it was boring for you.

  • Yep, they have one of the widest vocabularies of any bird in the world. Loggers in the old days at Lake mountain used to trip out because they could hear ox drawn log wagons on dirt/stone roads off in the middle of the bush where they knew there were no dirt roads.. it was the lyrebirds immitating the noise of the wagon wheels and ox hoofs on the stone road. :)

  • @oryxfreeride or should I say mr. idiot oryxfreeride, David Attenborough is quite possibly the most intelligent naturalist about and can only be seconded by perhaps Charles Darwin or Alfred Russel Wallace. He doesn't 'claim' anything, he presents information that is factual and consistently accurate. I, like millions of others, have been educated in a way far greater than any classroom has as a direct result of his hard work. I see no reason to consider him an idiot, but as for you, I do.

  • Thank you for actually putting up a video of a lyrebird being a lyrebird! I swear 90% of youtube's lyrebird videos are lyrebirds imitating human machinery...

(Also, on an unrelated note, why is there not a simple "cool" option in the youtube comment 'Reactions' drop-down menu...)

  • i want one DX lol cool vid XD

  • this bird is amazing

  • beautiful hehe.

    XD

  • i think the video is great. they are so hard to catch on camera- just too shy.

  • @robotpanda77 this ones a female, only males imitate sounds

  • @robotpanda77 You only think that because this video is displaying a female. Only the males make the imitations.

  • I'll have you know that's a female lyre bird.

  • I saw a lyrebird today while I was in the Strzelecki Ranges. Pitty it started running just as I was about to get my video camera ready.
