Don't think this is about something as simple and extreme as death. Darkness, sure, but not death. Look at the lyrics. 'Doesn't have to be so dark and lonely.' He has pain -- pain he didn't have as a kid. As a kid, free of the imminent baggage adult life brings, you innately recognize 'it's only life.' This 'rabbit hole' signifies the darkness one can easily slip into -- but that doesn't mean death. Depression, maybe. But not death.
