  • I have listened to some folk songs being played by Flute Mali (video). He weaves supreme magic into them when investing them with the purity of classical south Indian system. I realise from these experiences that a mere trick in rendering shows the underlying identity between Indian folk and classical systems of music. Of course, 'mere' is the adjective usable only for geniuses like mali.

  • Music Academy, Chennai (Madras) is good at honoring usually musicians who are brilliant with their creative imagination with a capacity to perform in concert with their accompanists. But it didn't like geniuses as it were, at least when it failed to honour Flute Mahalingam (Mali), with their highly regarded Sangita Kalanidhi. But having failed in the case of Mali, it realised its own dishonor by not honoring him and belatedly hung his photo very prominently at the entrance in its SK gallery !

  • @lsjtifo I am afraid most people among listeners and musicians believe that a mere high proficiency in the art (which can be achieved with dedication and disciplined hardwork) will usher genius in the person. How untrue a belief !

  • CORRECTION - Misuse of electronic media also tends to HAMPER even the cogniscenti, etc. etc.

  • @lsjtifo Rephrasing you, Greed, false values which may be socially 'useful' mediocrity, ... are certainly not qualifications that will ever make an artist a genius in his lifetime. A genius does not make an effort to become one, again well said. Given these facts, probability of a genius coming in our midst is very slim. Misuse of electronic media also tends to help even the 'cogniscenti to recognise immediately the wheat from the chaff, let alone the most extraordinary ones, the geniuses.

  • @kosuvallai unthinking (lay, musically mediocre or pretensious) people are free to, and they do, just join the chorus of audience or of the commercial media or whar self styled to applaud someone a genius. a genius is recognized by a few highly gifted people who are able to "perceive" it. a genius usually, not always, exhibits qualities like making what the masses think is elementary appear its profundities, another, in musicians of divine calibre like Mali is to introduce his audience to >>

  • Ofcourse, Mahalingam was great when he played without accompaniments. There was a another insident when a Violin player, I guess it was GuruRajappa, messed up his play. Same like here, his spliting of "beats" many times was unbelievably complicated to understand. But the real truth is, till today, nobody can perform carnatic music in flute like him. With the 5 sruti flute, he brings everyting out of it.

  • really a artist"s pride is to play with the accompaniments he have....

    if he think he is a real genius play without accompaniments..

    this is like fooling the audience..

    nowadays really young and talented artists are there......

    no need to see drunken musicians...
