My 1996 M-Edition Miata makes a whirring sound that bothers me. Just trying to figure out what this whirring noise is? First there's a screech, but that goes away, then there is a whirring sound. What does this mean? Timing belt too tight?

  • By the way, the whirring sound I was trying to diagnose is coming from inside my timing belt area.

  • ramrambatti, that sound is the belts between the engine and radiator, they handle power steering, air conditioning, etc. I believe it's two belts, though sometimes I've heard them referred to at serpentine belts. You can look down and hear them spinning. You can just replace them - the Miata forums suggest taking a spray bottle of water, and letting the car run, spray the belt with water, the one that squeaks will be the problem. Hope this helps.

  • Did you find out what that squealing was in the first 6 sec of the video? My Miata is producing the same exact noise.

  • That ain't a too tight timing belt. Tight timing belts have a really high-pitched whine, like an exaggerated turbo. I'd agree with the below posters. Seems like an accessory belt

  • Squeal you hear when you first start it is likely one of your belts. Most likely your alternator belt. The whine is your timing belt too tight at top of both cam wheels.

  • I mean the noise we hear on thhis video at 0:02-0:03.....

  • Would someone please also tell me about the noise we hear from the video? I often hear the whisling sqeeky noise wight after engine start with revving up. It is more prominent on the cold day.
