  • The Bus Pirate is an open source hardware design. That means anyone can make boards based on the design, so Sparkfun has not made a cheap knock-off as you suggest. It is based on the same hardware as the Seeed version.

    Perhaps you can enlighten us with the "issues" you mention.

    The Bus Pirate can supply 5V and 3.3V outputs on the 10-pin header but these need to be turned on through a terminal connection. There is no way to do this using the OLS software. Power your circuit as you would normally

  • @aarobc The bus pirate is designed for testing a circuit not for powering it. Having said that, it has 5V and 3.3V outputs which can be used to power a circuit although there are obvious limitations on the amount of current it can supply. What circuit are you powering and at what voltage/current?

  • Java for those that like interpreted languages and substandard performance applications. FAIL.

  • sorry sorry one more thing. the sparkfun bus pirate uses the true bus pirate software (the bus pirate is open source and free to use licence, so sparkfun made there own (which is OK) but its not very well designed.) so dont be confused there basicly the samel the only difference is the sparkfun hardware is a bit less dependible (sparkfun is a good designer though, so it cant be that bad. but to support the true project buy it from DP though SEEEd)

  • Also (sorry for so many posts) The bus pirate shown in this video is NOT the true bus pirate. Its a cheap knock off by sparkfun electronics. It has multiple issues in its hardware the true BP does not have. get the real BP from dangerous prototypes. that said my first post may be wrong. im not sure if the sparkfun version can drive circuits or not. the true bus pirate can.

  • also to note. Dont use the BP as a logic analyser. The logic analyser part of BP was just put in because it was asked for. the BP was never meant to be a logic analyzer. Use the OLS or Logic Shrimp. As those have good speeds (OLS 200Mhz, Logic Shript 20Mhz (good enough for most MCU's). The buspirate is clocked with the PICs internal clock. Not that fast and not stable enough for logic analyzing. You will fool yourself into thinking the RLE timings are good, they are NOT.

If its an issue of COM ports, issue the OLS on a differnt COM! if its an issue of power, the OLS only needs GND.

    BTW the bus pirate IS designed to power circuits. The power the circuit is reciving is directly input to the circuit through a voltage regulator from the USB port. Its OK.

  • Thanks for the video. Worked like a champ. My only issue is that I am receiving about 8-12 bus errors but the data I am reading all seems correct.

  • @hobbytronics101 I know that I can power the circuit from the bus pirate when I'm issuing commands directly from the terminal, but I don't see a way to do it while using it in conjunction with the OLS software, though I did end up just powering the circut from a separate power supply.

    I'm working with an RFID reader, the Bus Pirate didn't have a fast enough clock speed to decipher the signal though, so I ordered the actual Open Logic Sniffer, hopefully it will work.
