The laugh in the song makes me think it was the Big Bopper. Today probably nobody would imitate an African American singer but the 50s were a different time. Stan Freberg did a parody of Day-O in the 50s and Harry Belafonte was offended.

After hearing this, I'd say George Thorogood pretty much owes his sound to the Big Bopper. What a great talent and pioneer we lost 50 years ago this month. RIP J.P., Buddy and Ritchie!
