Tommy Emmanuel performs Windy and Warm and Classical Gas at the Australian Institute of Music as part of his amazing masterclass in December 2010. This was his 2nd performance of the masterclass check out our channel for more including a Merle Travis Medley and songs of his latest album Little by Little.

Two-time Grammy nominee Tommy Emmanuel is one of Australia's most respected musicians. The legendary guitarist has a professional career that spans almost five decades and continues to intersect with some of the finest musicians throughout the world. A household name in his native Australia, Tommy has garnered hundreds of thousands of loyal fans worldwide. Tommy's unique style - he calls it simply "finger style" - is akin to playing guitar the way a pianist plays piano, using all ten fingers. Rather than using a whole band for melody, rhythm, bass, and drum parts, Tommy plays all that - and more - on one guitar. Guitar legend Chet Atkins was one of the first to inspire Emmanuel to try this "fingerpicker" style as a child. Decades later, Atkins himself became one of Emmanuel's biggest fans.

The Australian Institute of Music.

Integration is the name of the game at AIM with six music departments on offer. Students focus on one major area of study but can integrate across other areas of study through a wide range of elective choices. AIM departments include; contemporary performance, music theatre, classical performance, composition and music production, audio technology and entertainment management, taught by some of the finest industry practitioners available in Australia.

So whilst a student may for example take audio as their major study, they can also choose to take units from any one of the other five major areas. In this way, students build a portfolio of music, audio, entertainment & business skills to create diverse career opportunities.

From AIM's annual showcase where students have the opportunity to perform on stage with full production to a full house, comes smaller creative projects where the journey of writing, producing and recording a song in the studio can be documented on video and placed on the web through AIMtv, as part of the AIM learning and artist development experience.

At the completion of two years of intensive study at AIM, students graduate with a Bachelor of Music degree majoring in one of six areas or a Bachelor of Entertainment Management. Equipped with state of the art Q Recording Studios, 300-seat concert hall, 60-seat intimate performance space, fully equipped Apple Mac labs, performing arts library and over 800 students, the Australian Institute of Music offers the complete educational experience.

  • Wow, that's some damn fine playing. By anyones' standard.

  • 2:53 :DD

  • @yamamonkey if tommy misses a note, its supposed to be like that. Just to make the other notes stand out more...

  • @yamamonkey sorry then... I realize now you were talking ironically. Yes, these "mistakes" are a consequence of not having a midi controller moving your fingers :P. By the way, I will see him on January 17th!

  • @gabinja I'm talking about barely noticeable mistakes here. I'm not criticizing or hating on Tommy (how could I! ) but sometimes, in the very speedy parts, if you listen closely, he misses a note.

But hell, it only proves he's human, right?

  • @yamamonkey they are not mistakes but particularities of live-playing. Are your a guitarist? If your are, I cannot understand how do you dar to write such a comment.

  • @BenjaminL96 eeeh, I don‘t know if you are a guitarist too, but playing bass with the thumb and melody and rhythm with the rest is a very usual way to play guitar. Tommy plays with a great technic and feeling and a very own style, but the way itself is not a particular way of him but the usual way among guitarists.

  • He plays bass with his thumb and melody and rhythm with the rest.

  • And God said...." Let there be a Great Guitar Player" and he then created...TOMMY EMMANUEL...!

  • did you notice the retuning at 4:19 ?

fortunately i had the possibility to see him live yesterday, this was such an amazing evening!
