Founders Porter | Jay's Beer Review

In this review I give another beer from the great brewey Founders a try. Again not a brewery I get locally so this was sent to me from my sister in Ohio. Check it out to see what I thought.

I can't speak for Tantrum, but I'm going to do it anyway. Even if the style debate could be settled objectively there's still perception that you and Chad are increasingly fussy in your reviews. I think that sentiment is spilling over to your comments page. Tantrum probably finds the fussyness annoying sometimes, but still thinks you're two of the best reviewers, and a critical approach is always better than an overly-charitable one, which Tantrum sees a lot of other guys taking.

@andrbroo well i dont really share any perception that chad does. my views are solely my own opinions. I gave this beer a really high ranking. but i couldn't quite give it the same honor that i give say dechutes the abyss. the only thing i said was tantrum comment was pretty generic, and if one is going to make a comment like that please elaborate...chad did add to that, and some of his views i agree with, but i didnt agree 100%... i respect everyones indiviual opinion.

I made a homebrew vanilla porter and it definitely lacked the strong roast flavor that better porters possess.

I'm still looking for some good commercial porters - can you recommend widely available top notch porters? I don't think I can get Founders locally - the other one that comes to mind is Fullers London Porter, that was probably my favorite.

I've had a lot of stouts but not many porters so I'm still looking for good ones!

@bshrules85 good porters... good question.... every one i have had you probaly cant get... fullers london porter, fonders porter, browns whisky porter, duck rabbit baltic porter...those are the best off the top of my head that i have had..but every day availalbe porters...much harder choice...

@jjrudy41 I agree, you should definitely do your reviews the way you want to do them. We both grade on how much we like the beer and how good the beer is to us. We're not catering to beer snobs or claiming that we're equal to "certified" beer judges and such. We're just enthusiastic about craft beer and we want to share that enthusiasm with the world. People like Jamie don't get that. That's why I made that "Chad9976 meets to beer review Police" cartoon to hopefully explain it through comedy.

@Chad9976 but this is jays beer reviews. i grade beer on what i think is important and relevent. and personal taste does play a part but so does true to the style... ive built my audience based on what i think. not what other tell me i should think or how i should grade, and people seem to like that.. if i did what others thought i should do i would have changed my pour technic years ago.. i always am open to constructive critiasism and respect others different tecnics. but

@Chad9976 well i don't think theres anything wrong with grading on style, but if you do that. i think its still important to compare it to beer in general as well... thats why sites like ratebeer. have a top 50 beers regardless of style but indiviual scores on beers as well.. you can score a perfect 100 and still not be considered one of the top 50 beers in the world. case in point... founders porter...
