simulation runs by filling a complex wave field with amplitudes and phases, and then uses a fast fourier transform to convert it into a height field. I did it as part of a physics simulation course, which was amusing since it was a rigid body simulations course and I didn't get around to trying to do the rigid body stuff until two months in.
