The pilot of this sitcom was written after Tony Hancock left the BBC for ITV, and became a series that ran from 05/01/62 until 26/12/74, whilst spinning off two feature films. Galton and Simpson wrote about the hapless Harold who couldn't escape his father or the life of a rag and bone man, by then a dying trade. Harold always wanted to prove that he could be his own man and that he didn't have to live under his father's wing, but his efforts always went awry leaving his father triumphant at the end of almost every episode. This classic episode sees Harold trying to better himself via the game of pot black. The final scene, after Harold has finally won the game, speaks volumes about the tone and bitter charm that the series maintains to this day.

  • I love the ending. I knew the old man was gonna be a hustler and was holding back. Those old timers always know more about things than they let on.
