Q. Why did you decide on calling it Alabama Alibi?
A. I liked the phrasing of the word-play, Alf had just brought in a song called Alligator Creek which sounded quite quirky so I thought I would come up with something similar. I've always found it more interesting to write about an American state rather than an English town, it just wouldn' t have the same authenticity if it was called, say, er, Aldershot Alibi, that's what I've always liked about Chuck Berry's songs; they always conjure up all these magical images. In my opinion only The Beatles and Ray Davies have succeeded in the portrayal of the English A to Z. So, the title Alabama Alibi seemed to sum up the whole story, there was this girl Ruby Bates who was travelling through Northern Alabama on a Freight train, when confronted with the Law she had to come up with some sort of alibi to get her off the hook from travelling across a stateline underage.
