This unique coal-fired 0-6-0 tank and tender locomotive was built in 2009 for a customer who wanted a coal-fired Roundhouse Dylan-style locomotive. In this video we see the locomotive being steamed by her owner for only the second time since taking delivery. As can be seen, she is very free steaming and free running. The loco has steam to spare and will easily haul a much heavier train than the pair of coaches used for this train while the owner still gets used to his new charge. Sadly, the wonderful smell of a 16mm scale loco burning real steam coal cannot be conveyed by video!

  • I do like the idea of 16mm scale coal fired locomotives but have never seen one going at a scale, steady speed. Can they run at slow, steady speeds?

  • @DebenValleyLightRail The loco in this video is manual and was only on its second steam. With a bit more running in and more driver experience it should plod round very sedately as it uses Roundhouse running gear. The only challenge to really slow running is keeping a steady momemtum as you run to ensure that the axle pump keeps the boiler topped up.

If you have a radio fitted loco you should, in theory, be able to run as steadily as you like - as long as you keep the water going in.

  • how did you couple the engine to the coaches if the back of the engine has 1 buffer on it and no coupler?

  • @gasfiredsteam

Are thank you, the idea of coal firing is cirtainly very very attractive and the locos appear to be getting cheaper!

  • In reply to Deben valley light rail from the driver, It does runs slowly, however I have a certain reputation to keep up !.

Seriously, now it is getting run in and taking heavier loads scale speeds are easily kept up as with gas firing , confident enough now to run on our indoor line

  • wow - simply wow - for a coal fired steam loco to be so small is... wow
