Performing a moisture test; checking your concrete for moisture.
What you need:
•A sheet of plastic or rubber
•Tape
Prior to painting your floor, it is important to perform a moisture test. If you sometimes see tiny crystals or white powder on your floor, this is actually moisture migrating up through your concrete. This may cause your floor to lose adhesion and eventually peel up.
One way to perform a moisture test is to tape a sheet of plastic to your concrete and wait overnight. Its common to see at least a little moisture, however, if there is excessive amounts, this may cause your system to fail.
Since every slab is different, it is important to perform this test.

  • define "excessive". A proper test for moisture, especially in the garage floor slab because they dont have plastic vapor barrier underneath, is the calcium chloride method or relative humidity test as performed by a professional.
